Sildenafil

Sildenafil Information

Brand Name: Viagra

Generic Name: Sildenafil, Generic Viagra

Other Common Names: Sildenafril

Viagra (Sildenafil) is a prescription medication used to treat male erectile dysfunction.

Viagra works by helping arteries in the penis relax and widen. This allows for more blood flow to enter the penis. As the arteries in the penis expand and harden, veins that normally carry away blood flow to the penis are compressed resulting in an erection. When nerves or blood vessels aren't working properly, a man may not be able to achieve an erection.

Viagra appears to work for 85% of the men who use it.

How To Take Sildenafil and Sildenafil Dosage and Administration

You should take Viagra about 1 hour before sexual activity. Swallow the tablet whole with some water. The amount of time it takes to have an effect varies slightly from person to person but it normally takes between half an hour and 1 hour. You may find that it takes longer to work if you take it with a high-fat meal.

You will learn how well Viagra works for you through your personal experience. If you do not get the results you expect, talk with your doctor. Viagra comes in different doses (25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg). You and your doctor can determine the dose that works best for you. However, increasing the dose above 100 mg will not produce a stronger erection, but rather may increase adverse effects of Viagra.

You should not take more than one dose of Viagra per day. Do not increase dosage.

If you are age 65 or older, or have serious liver or kidney problems, your doctor may start you at the lowest dose (25 mg) of Viagra.

It may take six to eight tries before it works optimally, as it may require time to overcome performance anxiety.

Viagra has only been tested and approved for use by men.

How Does Sildenafil Work?

When a man is sexually excited, the member will fill with enough blood to cause an erection. Viagra works by increasing blood flow to the member, as well as causing penile muscles to relax. It does not, however, initiate an erection. This is a common misconception that has led to widespread disappointment.

Scientists have found that in men suffering from erectile dysfunction, an enzyme constricts blood flow to the member. This enzyme is called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5). Viagra stores blood flow in an already-stimulated member by inhibiting the action of this enzyme.

By inhibiting PDE5, smooth muscle in the member remains relaxed for a longer period. This allows for increased blood flow into the cavernous tissue of the member thereby generating an erection. Sexual stimulation is still required to get an erection, but often times, less than would be normally required.

For Viagra to be effective, one must be able to initiate a partial erection in response to sexual stimulation. In the absence of this partial erection, or without sexual, tactile stimulation, Viagra will not work. Also Viagra can only be effective if the erectile dysfunction is due to neurological factors rather than emotional or psychological factors. If a man who doesn't have circulation problem uses Viagra, it will not increase his response. In other words, Viagra is not an aphrodisiac which might increase sexual response, although it is an enhancer of circulation and that is why it is effective.

Viagra works best when taken at a dosage of 100mg, approximately one hour before sexual intercourse on an empty stomach and is effective for about 4 hours. Studies show that it may take six to eight tries before it works optimally, as it may require time to overcome performance anxiety.

Viagra is an effective medication in restoring erectile ability, but it does not care about other aspects of sexual health. Viagra only gives erections for a limited time, not without risks and side effects. It does not treat the actual cause of erectile dysfunction.

Sildenafil Side Effects

Sildenafil Precautions and Contraindications

You should tell your doctor about any other medications that you are taking. Viagra may interfere with some drugs. Only take Viagra with other medications if recommended by your doctor.

You should not take a higher dose than the one which your doctor prescribed for you.

No research into long term usage of high dosages of Viagra has been conducted.

There is a possibility that Viagra might cause psychological dependence, making you unable to achieve an erection without it. However, this is merely a matter of psychology.

Sildenafil Drug Interactions

You must never use Viagra if you are taking any medicines that contain nitrates in any form (oral, sublingual [under the tongue], skin patch or by inhalation). Similarly, nitrates must never be used by men who take Viagra. Nitrates are found in many prescription medicines that are used to treat angina (chest pain due to heart disease) such as:

Viagra is absolutely contraindicated in subjects who are taking nitrates, in any form (oral, sublingual [under the tongue], skin patch, or by inhalation). If you are not sure if any of your medicines contain nitrates, or if you do not understand what nitrates are, ask your doctor or pharmacist. If you take Viagra with any nitrate-containing medicine or any nitrate, your blood pressure could suddenly drop to a life-threatening level. You could get dizzy, faint, or even have a heart attack or stroke.

Viagra has been shown to interact with Antidepressants (See: Viagra and Antidepressants).

Storing Sildenafil

Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.

Additional Notes

Viagra will not increase your sexual drive and it will not affect your fertility.

Viagra will only help you to get an erection if you are sexually stimulated.
